Short description of each leg

Leg 1: paddling with navigation
Distance: 46 km
Expected leader’s time: 8 h

Paddling takes place in the water area of large lakes. Check points are located on islands and promontories, and are tied up to simple orienting points.

Waves and strong wind may be source of danger on the route. Participants must wear life vests! The kayaks/ canoes must be equipped with floatation bags.

Leg 2: trekking
Distance: 25 km
Expected leader’s time: 5 h.

Trekking area is characterized by high relative altittudes and broken relief. During the race time, the highest peaks may be in the snow zone.

The navigation is relatively simple, check points are tied up to the large landscape elements. It requires great physical strength to traverse taiga on the mountainsides. In the end, the route passes through the hilly terrain with forest roads and traces of forest cutover patches.

Leg 3: mountain biking (asphalt road)
Distance: 33 km
Expected leader’s time: 1,5 h.

The route goes along the high-quality asphalt road with smooth rises and descents.

The teams must have minimal bicycle repair kit. Bicycles must be equipped with taillights. It is obligatory to wear a helmet during the leg.

Leg 4: mountain biking along the sea coast
Distance: 12 km
Expected leader’s time: 1 h.

The route goes along the shore of Kandalaksha gulf and one of the local rivers. Leg 5 - rock-climbing – takes place during the course of this leg.

In the beginning, the route goes along the sandy forest road with several large puddles. Later the road turns into the noticeable trail. One of the check points is located near the ancient “labyrinth” (the unique monument of ancient culture). Approaching the rocks (where rock-climbing leg takes place), the trail comes out to the beach which is flooded at full sea. According to the race plan, at least half of the teams will pass this area during the ebb and will not waste time waiting for water to go away.

After rock-climbing leg, bike coastering lasts till the beaches on the west side of the rock. Then the route gets out to the forest road and continues on the asphalt road.

The teams must have minimal bicycle repair kit. Bicycles must be equipped with taillights. It is obligatory to wear a helmet during the leg.

Leg 5: rock-climbing
Distance: up to 40 meters
Expected leader’s time: 10 min.

The participants will have a choice of several relatively simple routes located on rocks which end up in Kandalaksha gulf. The team climbs up with lead belay and rappels using the team’s rope. The team organizes the lead belay on their own. Intermediate anchor points are prepared by route designers and are well visible. Personal and team equipment necessary for rock-climbing leg is carried by the team during legs 3-8 (part of this equipment, for example, helmets, is included in Mandatory equipment list and is carried by participants throughout the race).

During this leg, bicycles are left in special transition area (in case of full sea – they are hang up on rope loops prepared by organizers.

Leg 6: orienteering
Distance: 8 km
Expected leader’s time: 50 min.

Takes place in the pine forest-park area with slight hills. The order of check points is determined by the team (approximately 10 check points). Check points are located on landscape elements or tied up to trails. The team is provided with the map on the leg starting point. For this period, the bicycles are left in transition area.

Leg 7: mountain bike
Distance: 40 km
Expected leader’s time: 2 h.

The route goes along the country and forest roads of different quality. In the beginning of the leg - grader road, then the quality of the roads worsens down to off-road track. The relative altitude change is quite small (less than 200m), but there is much microrelief.

The teams must have minimal bicycle repair kit. Bicycles must be equipped with taillights. It is obligatory to wear a helmet during the leg.

Leg 8: paddling (transportation of bicycles)
Distance: 28 km
Expected leader’s time: 5 h.

The leg takes place in water area of large lakes. The challenge is to transport the bicycles on kayaks/canoes used by the team. The team can use any techniques invented in advance. After the leg, the kayaks/canoes are left in transition area near water.

Waves and strong wind may be source of danger on the route. Participants must wear life vests! The kayaks must be equipped with floatation bags.

Leg 9: mountain bike orienteering by the legend
Distance: 25 km
Expected leader’s time: 2 h.

The route goes along the network of forest roads. The location of check points is indicated in the legend, but not shown on the map. The teams must have minimal bicycle repair kit. Bicycles must be equipped with taillights. It is obligatory to wear a helmet during the leg.

Leg 10: white-water paddling
Distance: 8 km
Expected leader’s time: 1 h.

For this leg, the teams will be provided with detailed sailing chart of the river, including recommendations on passing the rapids. The racers will have to raft along the river with obstacles of the 2nd-3d category of complexity. For one of the rapids, it is obligatory to preview the obstacle from the shore and consider possible carrying overland (10-50 meters). Check points are located on tributaries and places of mandatory preview.

All racers should wear life vests, helmets and wetsuits when on water. Kayaks/canoes should be equipped with floatation bags. In three points, there will be organizers’ belay (belay from the shore and belay from kayak on the water).

Leg 11: fixed ropes
Distance: 30 km
Expected leader’s time: 10 min.

The leg involves crossing the waterfall airwards using ropes fixed by the designers. In this place, the river divides into two tributaries. After finishing the rafting (Leg 10), the teams leave the kayaks/canoes in the transition zone near the fixed ropes crossing still wearing wetsuits and life vests. The teams cross the river from the right side of the right tributary to the island, check out on the check point, and begin the next leg – swimming across the left tributary.

The width of the river in the crossing place is approximately 20 m; the distance between the bearings (big pine trees) is approximately 30 m. The double rope is used for the crossing. Periodically, the leg designers tighten the rope to avoid the sagging. There is organizers’ belay on the crossing.

Leg 12: swimming
Distance: 30 meters
Expected leader’s time: 5 min.

The leg is exciting swimming in wetsuits across the whirlpool under the waterfall. The teams check out on the check point on the island, follow the marked corridor on the rocks along the waterfall to the water, and swim across the tributary with slow current to the visible point on the other side (or to the check point). Then the teams go uphill to the volunteers’ camp, and leave life vests and wetsuits there (in the bags with team number).

The swimming distance is about 30 meters. The current is slow, the river depth is from 0,7 to 2,5 meters. Downstream, there is a shallow place, which allows to walk to the shore or to rescue participants.

All participants must wear life vests, helmets and wetsuits. On the target side of the river is based volonteers camp with fire.

Leg 13: trekking
Distance: 16 km
Expected leader’s time: 3 h.

Trekking area is characterized by high relative altittudes and broken relief. During the race time, the highest peaks may be in the snow zone. The beautiful view from the peaks to the sea gulf will no leave participants indifferent :)

Orienteering is relatively simple, check points are tied up to the large landscape elements. Possible is dense fog, which makes it difficalut to navigate in highland tundra. It requires great physical strength to traverse taiga on the mountainsides. In the end, the route goes on marshy seaside plain and crosses the highland bog.

Lap 14: sea coastering
Distance: 15 km
Expected leader’s time: 3 h.

The leg goes along the tidal zone. The starting point is near the old lighthouse. The finish is in the transition zone of fixed ropes leg, i.e. the teams return to their kayaks/canoes.

The conditions of the route differ for full sea and ebb time. During the ebb, it is much easier. The time required for passing this leg is such that even leaders will not be able to pass it during the ebb time only. This fact puts the teams in equal conditions. On the other hand, the knowledge of tide schedule allows the teams to make tactic decisions and correctly apportion time and energy during the race.

Leg 15: sea-water paddling
Distance: 25 km
Expected leader’s time: 4 h.

Paddling takes place in the water area of Kandalksha gulf. The starting point is the transition zone of fixed ropes leg. The teams carry their kayaks/canoes over the land avoiding the difficult rapids and start the route in the marked place. Before going out to the sea, the teams pass the relatively simple river mouth rapids, its difficulty depends on tide time. In the coastal zone, there are strong tidal currents, which can be both - helpful and hindering. The route goes through the archipelago of rocky islands.

The main danger during the leg are waves and strong wind. Participants must wear life vests! The kayaks/canoes must be equipped with floatation bags.

Leg 16: trekking
Distance: 55 km
Expected leader’s time: 8 h.

The leg goes along several mountain ranges and teams will face all variety of obstacles typical for highland taiga (steeep slopes, impassable taiga, river crossing, difficult orienteering). During this trekking, there will be high cumulative altittude change. During the first part of the route, the check points are located on distinct peaks divided by deep canyons. Further, the teams will follow the rocky canyon of a small stream and cross the river. In the end, there will be relatively complicated orienteering on highland terrain.

Leg 17: roller skates
Distance: 16 km
Expected leader’s time: 1,5 h.

The teams get their roller skated in the finish point of the previous trekking leg. The final leg goes along the good quality asphalt road with low traffic. The cumulative ascent is approximately 60 meters. Optionally, the route can be completed on foot. The leg ends with triumphant finish in the gates of Camping “Kolvica” (the race base camp).

During this leg, the participants must wear helmets. It is recommended to wear protection pads (delivered to the start of the leg together with rollar skates).

Cut-offs points to exit the race

Teams falling behind the race schedule make decision to exit the race on the following points:

  1. The race base camp (camping “Kolvica”) after the Leg 2 and Leg 8;
  2. The place of fixed ropes leg after Leg 14.

The teams will be informed about the time limit for each cut-off point. After this time, the teams will not be allowed to continue the race.

Access to equipment, rest during the race

Several times during the race, the teams have access to equipment, prepared in advance and left at the race base camp (start and finish of the race). It can also can be left with kayaks (transported to the point by the team during Leg 1 and Leg 10). The teams can rest at these points or any other places during the race.
The rest time is not cut-off.
